17th Annual Stanley Caplan User-Centered Product Design Award

Nominations Due:  April 27, 2018

The HFES Product Design Technical Group (PDTG) invites you to submit a nomination for the 17th annual Stanley Caplan User-Centered Product Design award.  No entry fee or other cost is required.  The award emphasizes both product design and the methods used to specify and achieve the design.

The winning product/system will be recognized at the 2018 HFES Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA on October 2nd and the awardees will be asked to present a talk on the product and methodology.  The awardees will also be expected to submit a paper to “Ergonomics in Design”, the Quarterly Journal of Human Factors Applications.

Winner Announced - 2017 Stanley Caplan User Centered Design Award

Abbott Laboratories and Hill-Rom Receive 2017 User-Centered Product Design Award

Two medical products earned recognition for excellence in both product design and the human factors/ergonomics methods used to specify and achieve the design.

The recipients of the 2017 HFES Product Design Technical Group Stanley H. Caplan User-Centered Product Design Award are Abbott Laboratories for Alinity ci-series Diagnostic Systems and Hill-Rom for the Centrella™ Smart+ bed. The User-Centered Product Design Award emphasizes innovative and user-centered approaches to human factors/ergonomics and industrial design.

The award was presented at a special session at the HFES 2017 International Annual Meeting on Tuesday, October 10. During the award session, members of the winning teams discussed their design methodologies and the successes and challenges encountered in developing the devices.

This hand held computer is used workers in warehouse management, retail, and manufacturing industries to productively pick, stock, pack, and ship orders, and for inventory management and warehouse management. One of the things you will hear at the session is how user research led to incorporating a major ergonomic design feature that differentiated this product from others.
